Compassion and aid campaigns

Many people in Surinam, the Antilles and Aruba feel beaten when Germany occupies the Netherlands. They sympathise passionately with the events in Europe. All kinds of organisations are set up to honour the ties with the Netherlands and to collect money for the victims of war and the allied war effort.

Raise money

The people raise many hundreds of thousands of guilders, for instance to buy a Spitfire and a torpedo-boat destroyer. People also collect silver foil for the war effort. The people knit pullovers and socks for the allied soldiers. Annual commemorations are held for the Dutch soldiers who fell in May 1940.
