The program emphasizes the importance of a well-functioning, democratic rule of law. Under the guidance of a museum docent, students discover how the Netherlands changed when democracy ended in 1940. Discrimination, censorship, violence and convictions without trial became part of everyday reality. Students learn that freedom, equality and solidarity were not self-evident basic values during the occupation period and are still challenged today.

A visit to the Resistance Museum Amsterdam is an activity that shows the meaning of democratic values and addresses current events and social issues. Each tour ends or starts with a guided dialogue, where students have to think about statements. In a safe environment, students can share experiences and perspectives, discuss which situations are racist, discriminatory or stereotypical, and reflect on how they relate to others in the room.
